The Chronicles of Narnia: The Odyssey

The fifth book in the Chronicles of Narnia series, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis is an action-packed story that will enchant any mind. The premise of the story is this great journey on the sea in which the goal is to reach the End of the World. Taking place some time after the events of Prince Caspian; Edmund, Lucy, and their cousin Eustance find themselves in Narnia and meet with King Caspian. They then follow along his quest to find seven lost companions and thus sail into uncharted waters. Along the way they encounter a multitude of challenges, from slavers to dragons to enchanted lands and everything in-between. The story is very reminiscent of Homer's The Odyssey, which is the story of a Greek king finding his way home for ten years and having to overcome ridiculous challenges. However, C.S. Lewis does work his magic and makes it wholly a children's tale full with monsters, extraordinary creatures, and magical beings. He also has Aslan play his role as all things Christ and this story is no exception. From vanquishing Darkness to his heavenly home, Lewis eloquently weaves Christian themes into the story, making it manageable for children to grasp. Overall, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is great for kids as it is the children's version of The Odyssey. 5 stars and great for those who don't want to read The Odyssey but still want a similar adventure.
