St. Alphonsus Liguori:

St. Alphonsus Liguori was an Italian Catholic bishop, spiritual writer, composer, musician, artist, poet, lawyer, scholastic philosopher, and theologian. He founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists). In 1762 he was appointed Bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti. A prolific writer, he published nine editions of his Moral Theology in his lifetime, in addition to other devotional and ascetic works and letters. Among his best known works are The Glories of Mary and The Way of the Cross, the latter still used in parishes during Lenten devotions. He was canonized in 1839 by Pope Gregory XVI and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1871. One of the most widely read Catholic authors, Alphonsus Liguori is the patron saint of confessors.

Have confidence!

These exhortations by Saint Alphonsus Liguori remind us of God's unbounded love for us, of his kindness and his desire to listen to us. It urges each of us to develop an ongoing conversation with God. It reminds us to approach God boldly, not with a false confidence, but by trusting his love and mercy for us. A small paperback, easy to carry. Can be read in one sitting or used as a handy reference. A great companion for adoration!

helpful pocket aid to turn to time and again

We so often get caught up in the ways of the world, and lost in them, that we often need refresher courses of heavenly realities: things like how God is and how life is. So often we put human characteristics (and limitations) on God when realIy that's not true at all. Doing this type of thing hugely limits the richness of the faith because you're putting a huge limit to your understanding of God's nature.

Why is understanding God's nature important? Because you have to understand who you're communicating with, as with any relationship. So often do we treat Him in certain ways as if he's a normal, flawed human, like our other relationships. What a mistake this is! We can count and depend on Him like no other! He knows us better than no other! I've reread these writings from Liguori multiple times and every time it feels like I say to myself "Oh yeah, that's right! I forgot that!"

This is one of the most important aids you can have for your spiritual life as it will allow you to communicate more perfectly with God in a manner that is most pleasing to Him.
