Mystery of the Church offers a comprehensive overview of the central themes of contemporary ecclesiology. Beginning with the nature and institution of the Church, the book examines what the Church is at her core, rooted in Christ and sustained by the Holy Spirit. From there it explores the four marks of the Church—One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic—showing how the unity and holiness of the Church endure despite the sinfulness of her members.
The volume includes a rich discussion of Catholicity, including perspectives drawn from Eastern Christendom, and an examination of the Church’s apostolic foundation centered on the Petrine office. Fr. Haffner also presents the Church as the universal instrument of salvation and considers her proper relationship with the State, with scientific inquiry, and with the unfolding of the Kingdom of God.
This is the fifth entry in Fr. Paul Haffner’s systematic theology series, which also includes Mystery of Creation, The Mystery of Mary, The Mystery of Reason, and The Sacramental Mystery. Clear, concise, and deeply informed, this volume serves both students of theology and readers seeking a structured, authoritative presentation of the Church’s identity and mission.
Fr. Paul Haffner is a priest and professor of theology at Regina Apostolorum University in Rome. He also serves as a visiting professor at the Pontifical Gregorian University and as an adjunct lecturer at Duquesne University’s Roman Campus. He is the author of several works of systematic theology and is recognized for his clear, scholarly, and accessible approach to doctrinal topics.
